Light is the beginning. Story is the destination. — Ramin Barzegar

Ramin Barzegar is an Iranian-American visual artist, photographer, and documentary filmmaker whose creative journey has been shaped by painting, sculpture, industrial design, architectural lighting design, and visual storytelling.

For more than four decades, he has explored the relationship between light, form, space, and human experience through multiple artistic disciplines. While photography has become his primary medium, every chapter of his artistic journey continues to influence the way he observes, interprets, and tells stories through images.

THE JOURNEY

A Visual Language Shaped Across Disciplines

Long before photography became his primary medium, Barzegar explored form and expression through painting, sculpture, industrial design, and architectural lighting. These disciplines developed a way of seeing in which structure, proportion, material, light, and emotion are inseparable.

His early work in sculpture received recognition in Iran, including first place at the first national biennial for university art students and seventh place among participating sculptors at Iran’s first Sculpture Biennial.

Architecture as Visual Poetry

Architecture has always been at the heart of Barzegar’s photographic vision. Rather than simply documenting buildings as physical structures, he approaches them as compositions of geometry, light, rhythm, and human imagination.

His background in industrial design and architectural lighting continues to shape the way he interprets space. His architectural photography has received international recognition, including the title of Architecture Photographer of the Year at the International Photography Awards.

Stories Beyond Borders

Documentary filmmaking has taken Barzegar beyond architecture and into different cultures, remote landscapes, wildlife environments, and human stories across Africa and other parts of the world.

These experiences expanded his visual language and reinforced a belief that every place and every person carries a story worth preserving. His documentary work is rooted in observation, curiosity, patience, and respect for the people and environments he encounters.

Exploration as Part of the Creative Process

Curiosity has always been an essential part of Barzegar’s creative process. From working beneath the ocean’s surface to seeing landscapes from the air, exploration has repeatedly changed both his physical point of view and the way he approaches visual storytelling.

For him, the journey is not separate from the image. Experience, risk, discovery, and observation all become part of what finally enters the frame.

Alongside his creative practice, Barzegar serves as a juror for international photography competitions, evaluating work by photographers from around the world.

He views judging not simply as selecting winning images, but as an opportunity to recognize originality, encourage emerging voices, and contribute to the continuing evolution of photography.
